There are still lesser-known corners of Italy that offer travelers that special feeling of discovering a hidden gem — a place that’s not teeming with crowds or souvenir shops. On Ischia - a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples - you will find a dreamy version of the Mediterranean the way it used to be.  Known for its mineral-rich thermal waters, this volcanic island may be Italy’s “hottest” destination - with bubbling hot springs, therapeutic spas and intimate beach resorts - but it remains below the radar of most foreigners. First colonized by Greeks in 700 BC and named Pithecusa, it was conquered by the Romans about 400 years later and renamed Enaria, meaning land of wine in reference to the rich, volcanic soil that produces lovely mineralized white wines even today. Around 5 AD, the island was renamed again as Ischia and continued to be conquered by Byzantines, Saracens, the French and the Spanish, all of whom left their mark in an amazing collage of history.

* Visits to the Greek history museum, Villa Arbusto and the Giardini Mortella; a spectacular subtropical and Mediterranean botanical garden

* Learn how to make "real" Italian pizza and a spritz the Neapolitan way!

* Hike Mount Epomeo and and tour an island vineyard with a tasting and lunch

* Boat trip to the picturesque neighboring island of Procida and lunch back on Ischia at a secret restaurant only reachable by boat!

* Island shopping highlights; ceramics and custom sandals!

* Enjoy the freshest seafood straight from the Mediterranean

* Time for relaxing in the sun and swimming in the Mediterranean
